ESSENTIAL HERMANNPLATZ
Hermannplatz: noisy, unsanitary, unsafe, yet essential. Every day, a crowd caught up in the public transport system passes through this bustling Berlin hub in search of their bus-to-underground connections. Such constant stream of people in turn sustains a host of small businesses rooted in the square, designed to capitalise on even the briefest of pauses: shops selling soft drinks, fast food and coffee; market stalls offering handicrafts and fresh fruit; street art; begging; and, judging by the ubiquitous police presence, widespread crime. Moreover, this ceaseless daily flow presents the camera with a diverse and unvarnished Germany, defying stereotypes.
